Potty training regression in as few terms as possible can be described as a parent’s worst nightmare during potty training. This is more so after you have spent quite some time and effort trying to make sure that your precious little one manages to get to know how to use the toilet. There is nothing as bad as having all your progress wiped away in a few days or weeks as though you did not make any effort. This is why this is usually so frustrating to many parents. Once this happens, it is very important that you find out how to deal with it properly, so that you do not get to suffer more.

Causes of Regression

Potty training regression is not something that occurs just out of the blues, there are causes of it, and in most cases, we the parents are usually the driving force behind this regression. Our over enthusiasm with the child’s success out of the potty training makes us push them harder and harder so that they can get to learn more. However, we fail to realize that in the course of this process, we destroy all that we have done.

Apart from the enthusiasm of parents, regression can also come as a result of parents panicking and going into overdrive whenever things go wrong. It is very important that you take your time to make sure that you understand what the whole process of potty training involves, and the possible mishaps that can come along the way. As soon as you know this, you should be in a good position to control your panic in the event that things do not go on as expected.

Immediate measures after Regression

Like you would do with any other situation, in the event that you have realized there are instances of regression, the first thing that you will have to do is to put an end to the training. This is important as it makes you take a rest and start from the beginning again. The good thing about taking some time off is that in most cases, you are able to trace back your mistake and therefore make amends as to that extent, and actually correct the situation. There are a lot of things that you can actually learn in the event that you take time and reflect on the causes and reasons for regression.

Besides that, you need to make sure that you let your baby know that you are taking a break from the normal training. Though young, most of us are not aware of the fact that these babies can actually tell when we are not pleased, and also when things are not going according to schedule. Suddenly interrupting the procedure without any information in most cases raises alarm to the babies, and this could further fuel the potty training regression.

Take a few days off, and make sure the baby takes time off too. The importance of taking time off after regression is that it gives you enough time to make sure that the baby also gets rid of the excess pressure that you exerted upon them. During this time, it would be very helpful for you to try and make sure that the baby gets enough attention, so that they do not retreat into a shell away from you.

Potty training regression is an experience, and the most important lesson that you should draw from this experience is the fact that the potty training process is a process, and you should never mistake it for an incident that you can manage in a day or a few hours.
